BYD EVs aren't being sold in the U.S. now largely because of 27.5% tariffs on the sale price of Chinese vehicles when they arrive at ports. Donald Trump slapped on the bulk of the tariff, 25%, when he was president, and it was kept in place under Joe Biden.

BYD launched a price war on ICE vehicles last month with the new Qin Plus EV and PHEV models. Starting at $15,200 (109,800 yuan), the new EV officially opened a “new era of electricity is cheaper than oil.” The DM-i (PHEV) version is even cheaper, starting at around $11,000 (79,800 yuan).

The BYD Atto 3 has all the ingredients here to continue to be a good electric car for the money for the next five years, provided BYD keeps updating it. It is a worthy winner of this category given its price, comfort, roominess and performance – and it shone against the competition.

Radio and electrical system malfunction. The radio turns on itself after parking the car, even when everything else is turned off. The frequency of occurrence has increased over time. Suspected connection to the 12V battery issue, which drains quickly if the traction battery charge is low.
